Trust Your Gut

It took me a long time to believe in myself. To believe that what I felt in my heart and soul was a Truth that I could depend on.
Intuition. Instinct. Sixth Sense. They call it your “gut”. “Trust your gut.” That’s the saying, but is it really true that what you feel in your “gut”, in your heart and soul, is some sort of truth, a stamp of approval, some sort of Higher Guidance that is there for you at all times? Is that gut feeling truly something you can depend on without a single doubt?
Newborns know instinctively that their mother’s breast will provide them with the nourishment they need to grow and develop both physically and emotionally. As they grow they become curious and begin to explore the world. They naturally start to move then roll over, crawl, walk, run and jump without fear or doubt. They don’t question their abilities. They are not afraid. Fear is something that is learned. They do not question whether they can or cannot achieve a task or a goal. They just go for it because they believe they can. If they fail they just try again. When the task is perfected they simply move on to the next challenge without missing a step. In so doing they become more secure, more confident, more capable and more independent. Little children instinctively trust and follow their gut. That is until they are taught not to.
It is an unfortunate reality that as we grow into adults many of us become insecure and self-doubting. This happens because of a variety of reasons; a rough childhood or some sort of non-supportive family, circumstance, environment or even a painful experience. Whatever the reason it seems inevitable that we will at some point in our lives feel that we are somehow lacking or undeserving. We may doubt our self worth or become fearful. Fortunately, in today’s world, there are many resources available where help and guidance can be found. One of those resources is the “Life Coach”.
The work of a coach is quite different from that of a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist and the like. Coaches do not treat their clients. Coaching is a solution-based practice in which the two work together in tandem to achieve goals. Together they engage in a process of discovering, clarifying, defining and prioritizing the clients’ purpose and mission. The ultimate outcome is that the client will recognize hir unique strengths, skills and talents and gain the confidence to realize hir goals and dreams.
The coach aims to create a supportive environment in which a trusting relationship can be built. The client must feel safe in order to share hir story. This is accomplished by emphatic and focused listening and by acknowledging, respecting and believing in the client. Once a trust is established the coach will ask pertinent questions that will lead clients to resolve their own issues.
At times clients might feel the need to dig into their past in an attempt to discover a possible source of their plight. If so then the coach will accommodate. However, as I mentioned above, a coach is not a therapist. Rather than dwell on the past, s/he will suggest the client focus back to the “here and now”. This is not to say that past issues are not important. Of course they are. However coaching is a pathway to move forward rather then dig deeper into the past.
Coaching is a process that focuses on a clients’ strengths and positive traits. These become the “tools” that can help hir through hard times and serve to maintain the good times! It is the client who knows what is best. In truth the coach will have succeeded when the client no longer needs hir.
I am reminded of the saying:
“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Can a coach be regarded as a role model, a person whose behaviors and qualities are admired and sometimes emulated? Yes. That can happen. I will share a brief personal story.
For much of my earlier years I yearned to be recognized as a person of worth. For various reasons I had lost confidence in myself and believed I needed positive acknowledgment from outside sources. Initially I was not aware that this was my plight. Eventually I came to realize it. However, I did not seek help for this particular issue. Instead help came to me in an unexpected way.
I was a music teacher at an elementary school in rural New Hampshire. It was my job to present the annual “holiday” concert. “Holiday” was the new vernacular for “Christmas” and that year Chanukah coincided with Christmas. This now being a “holiday” concert, and because I was Jewish, I decided to include a short Chanukkiah (aka Menorah) candle-lighting ritual as part of the event.
I was under the assumption that there were no Jewish students in the school and thought that, in the very least, lighting the candles would serve to raise awareness about diverse traditions. Before I lit the candles, however, I decided to ask if there were any Jewish students who would like to help me. A young boy literally jumped out of his seat and confidently and fearlessly raised his hand high then eagerly came forward. Together we lit the candles as I recited the Chanukah blessings.
One day, six years later, that same young man arrived at the synagogue where I was then working as a Hebrew and Jewish studies teacher. He introduced himself and thought he recognized me. After confirming that I was indeed his former music teacher he proceeded to tell me his story.
He explained that he was from a mixed marriage family with one Jewish parent. He had very little exposure to his Jewish side as the parents were non practicing of any particular religion. At the local public school he might have been the only Jewish student in his grade. It wasn’t until later, when he was in High School, that he met another Jewish student.
Now he was sixteen and old enough to drive. He was still very curious about his Jewish side and was determined to learn more. His Jewish friend told him about the synagogue where she was learning and that’s how he came to be there now. He reminisced about the “Holiday” concert from six years earlier. He had been profoundly moved by the experience. It was the first time he had seen a Jewish person proudly share our Jewish identity and traditions. More than that, it was the first time he actually took part in a Jewish ritual. That moment left a lasting impression on him and proved to be a major turning point in his life.
I was unaware at that time that I had become that young boys’ role model. I was grateful that he had come forward to tell me his story. I realize now that when he was a fourth grader it was I who had empowered him. Six years later, by simply sharing his story with me, it was he who empowered me. He had just turned my life around. Sometimes it’s just that easy. One little action. One significant moment.
Over the years others have randomly come forward to let me know that I have made a difference in their lives. Some go as far as to say they wish had the courage to live like I do. The more this happens the more secure and confident I become. The more I believe in myself.
I include this story to demonstrate the importance of believing in yourself and trusting your “gut”.
We may not always know if and how we have helped or influenced someone. I was fortunate that people took the time to let me know. Yet I still often find myself wondering if I have made the correct decision, said or done the right thing. Or did I fail completely? I may never know. This is where “trust your gut” comes into play.
Coaches must be confident and believe in themselves. Otherwise how can they expect to coach others? How can they expect to be trusted by others? Even if at times they may lack confidence or feel doubt coaches can rest assured that it is okay. Whatever the outcome, it is okay. Your gut will never do you wrong.
We are not perfect. We do not have all the answers and that is okay. Because the client already has the answers. We just need to have the questions! We just need to have the confidence that whatever we are doing or saying, as long as it is with the right intention, will ultimately help our clients.
I asked the question at the beginning of this essay: “Is that gut feeling truly something you can depend on without a single doubt?”
Call it what you will; intuition, instinct, sixth sense, gut, Higher Power or G-D. The answer is YES!
Trust your gut without a single doubt!

Living every day, we struggle in this world
We’re living in fantasies and dreaming
Of a world we can live in sheltered from
Realities of a world that’s struggling
To believe that fantasies could become realities
In my lifetime I have seen life goes on everyday
Until death comes beckoning and we go on struggling
In a world of fantasies sheltered from realities
Just one life can change our world into a dream
And we can be a fantasy
- - INSTRUMENTAL - - -
Living everyday struggling in this world
We’re living with promises, fantasies, make believe
We’re sharing realities of a world we all live in
Believing that just one life can change our world
Of fantasies to realities

I am not afraid when life turns me around - I am not afraid
I am not afraid of the sight and the sound - I am not afraid
I embrace a heavenly face. A simple smile. Almighty Grace
I forgive. I wanna live. I can love. L-rd I can give
And I can't help but go to where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Traveling on to where I'm bound
I am not alone in the circle of life - I am not alone
I am not alone in my struggle and strife - I am not alone

Take life one day at a time now - take it nice and slow
Take time to look all around you got everywhere to go
See the greens, the blues and the yellows jumping out at you
Light, heavy, easy or mellow - anything will do
Whenever you're you; whenever you're you
Loud thunder, bright bolts of lightning - wonders of the world
Stars shining, white moon a-rising - every boy and girl
Gaze fondly, reach for each other - embracing gentle winds
Be there for now and forever - hear the heavens sing
Whenever you're you; whenever you're you
Take flight, go where your wings do fly
Stay low or climb to a higher high
Reach out, follow your heart - expand
Near or far, wherever yu land it's grand
Whenever you're you; whenever you're you
Golden sun, rainbow-colored skies surround you as you go
Move forward eyes open wide, you've nothing to do but grow
Each day is your very first birth-day, celebrate it with ease
Live life with each loving moment - happy, full and free
Whenever you're you; whenever you're you

עננים פרצופים של הים ואתה הולך

Migrant gulls Speckle the shoreline and you… Are there
The waves, They come and they go and you Are there
Thinking, thoughts of the day You want to run… Run away …
The wind Whispers a message that you don’t hear….
Clouds Changing their faces and you Depart
While the sea Gathers her treasures as you
Turn away. As you - turn Away …

There's a world full of lies if that's all you feel If that's what is real for you
There's a world that is battered and tattered and shattered
Where evil is lurking and waiting to pounce
If that's all you see - if that's all you be If that's what you feel.... is real
There's a world that is crumbling down to the ground. Just look around
There's a darkness that lingers if you want to lose
